Obituary

Robert Mihran Kebabian, age 101, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 10, 2018 in New Haven, CT. He was the beloved husband of the late Lavinia "Vickie" Crawford Kebabian. "Bob" was born in Ridgefield, NJ on October 23, 1917, son of the late Mihran Haig Kebabian, and Florence May (Paton) Kebabian. He grew up in West Haven and New Haven at the family home on Chapel Street in Westville. Bob was a graduate of Hillhouse High School and attended Colgate University and Lafayette College where he was a brother of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was employed in the family business for many years in sales and appraisals, at a fifth generation 1882 established business and America's oldest oriental carpet store, Kebabian's Rugs of New Haven. Bob was an avid tennis player, swimmer, gymnast, singer, dancer, and violinist, lover of Hawaiian culture, and juggler who enjoyed a lifetime of walking and jogging, as well as, being an avid Yale Football fan having grown up directly across from the Yale Bowl. He and Vickie traveled extensively with yearly trips to his wife's Yorkshire, England home, and especially to their favorite spots of Watch Hill, RI and the Jersey Shore. Bob's engaging and outgoing personality was part of his kind and caring character as he loved all animals and was a member of numerous clubs that included the Harugari German Singing Society, the Armenian Students Association, the International Students Club, and the Yale Football Association. A proud veteran, Bob honorably served in the Connecticut National Guard before joining the Army Air Corp early during World War II, and was stationed four years with the VII Fighter Command 7th Air Force Pursuit Air Wing at Fort Shafter Barracks and Hickam Field, Oahu, Hawaii, where he instructed fighter pilots as an Advanced Link Trainer Instructor who taught aviator to fly using only navigational aid for night and bad weather missions off the Pacific Fleet Aircraft Carriers. Bob was awarded numerous citations and praise for his expert training of these airmen. He leaves a step daughter Jill Heathman of Branford, nephew and family, Frank and Becky Barron, Dr. Gregory Barron, M.D. of Branford and Middletown, John P. Jr., and Peggy Kebabian, Joshua, Ellen, and Phoebe of Guilford, niece Linda Kebabian Cameron of Perth, Australia, and niece Marcella Kebabian of New Haven, and good friends Mr. & Mrs. Dean Singewald of Madison. He was predeceased by sister and husband Evelyn Kebabian Baron and Frank, Sr., and brother and wife John P. Kebabian, Sr. and Phyllis. A memorial service for Bob will take place on Friday, November 30th at 6:00 p.m. at Center Church on the Green, 250 Temple St., New Haven.
