Obituary

Maria G. Lavorgna Cusano, 87 of Hamden, died peacefully on Friday, June 22, 2018 at Connecticut Hospice, Branford with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Pasquale Cusano. Maria was born in San Salvatore Telesino, province of Benevento, Italy, on May 12, 1931; she was the daughter of the late Bartolomeo and Marta Martino Lavorgna. She had resided in Hamden for most of her life, North Haven for two years, and Deltona, FL for twenty years, returning to the area in 2012. Along with her husband Pasquale, she founded, owned and operated Cusano Catering of Hamden for fifteen years before retiring in 1992. She previously worked at the former Henry Richards Co. of Hamden for twenty years, and was also a parishioner of St. Anthony Church, New Haven. For 36 years, along with her husband, she ran a booth at St. Anthony's Feast. One of her passions was to make biscotti for all her family and friends. Maria is survived by her husband Pasquale's loving children whom she loved and helped raise as her own; Antonio (Laura) Cusano of New Haven and Nicoletta "Lena" (Giovanni) Bencivenga of North Haven. She is also survived by one brother, Carmine (Anna) Lavorgna of Rome, Italy, six grandchildren, Teresa (Brian) Carey, Pasquale (Allison) Cusano, Anna Maria (Ernie) Santoro, Nicole Bencivenga, Mario (Erica) Bencivenga and Tammi (Christopher) Spose, ten great-grandchildren, Sara, Juliet, Luke, Henry, Maille, Fiona, Oliver, Marcella, Claire and Nora, eight brothers and sisters-in-law, Rosalia Coppola of Myrtle Beach, SC, Erminia Cusano of Southington, Silvia Coppola of Milford, Guido Coppola of North Haven, Antonietta (Giulio) Savo of Shelton and Angelina (Carlo) Coppola of North Haven, two nephews, Stefano and Luciano Lavorgna of Rome, and one niece Marta Lavorgna of Naples, Italy. She is also survived by many other nieces, nephews and cousins, including her first cousin Carmela (Pat) Perrone of East Haven. She was predeceased by her first husband, Salvatore Romano, three brothers-in-law, Luigi Coppola, Vincenzo Cusano and Pasquale Coppola, and one sister-in-law, Maria Coppola. Maria herself, and her family would like to thank to the many family members, nurses and aids from St. Raphael's and CT Hospice for their loving care, compassion and attention. Maria's family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. Her funeral procession will leave from the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. in St. Anthony Church, 70 Washington Ave., New Haven. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum at St. Lawrence Cemetery, West Haven. Memorial contributions in Maria's name may be made to St. Anthony Church, New Haven, CT. www.washingtonmemorialfh.com
