Obituary

Luigi Carnale, 98 of West Haven died suddenly on Thursday, July 28, 2016. He was the beloved husband of the late Ermelinda Corsi Carnale. Luigi was born in Supino, Province of Frosinone, Italy on October 14, 1917, a son of the late Vittorio and Clelia Boni Carnale, and had resided in West Haven for the past sixty years. He retired from Marlin's Firearms formerly of North Haven in 1983, and during his post retirement worked for Sacred Heart Academy, Hamden for more than thirty years until 2014. Luigi was a WWII Veteran of the Italian Army, and proudly served with the 80th Infantry Division La Spezia (Airlanding). He fought in the North African Campaign in Libya and Tunisia where his division suffered heavy losses, and he was one of very few survivors. Luigi enjoyed gardening, and cooking for his family, and was a long time member of the San Cataldo Society of New Haven. He is survived by three daughters, Lina (Aurelio) Mirabella of Hamden, Leda (Pasquale) Mercurio of Wallingford and Linda (Fred) Cote of West Hartford, one son, Victor (Jennifer) Carnale of Wallingford, one sister, Vittorina Zuccaro of Toronto, Canada, ten grandchildren, Louis Mirabella, Marc Mirabella, Michael Mercurio, Patricia Amodei, Melissa Gensure, Emily Cote, Christopher Carnale, Amalia Cote, Rachael Carnale, and Kevin Carnale, and ten great grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, Antonio, Giuseppe and Americo Carnale.

Luigi's family will receive relatives and friends on Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. His funeral procession will leave from the funeral home on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anthony Church, 70 Washington Ave., New Haven. Entombment will follow in the St. Lawrence Cemetery Mausoleum.
