Lionel Alfonso Richards, III, 35 of New Haven known to his family and friends as "Champ", "Slo" and "Bubba" departed this world from his home on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Lionel was born in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands on May 15, 1983, the beloved son of Janet Stephens Vanterpool of New Haven and Lornie Richards of St. Thomas. He moved to Bridgeport from St. Thomas in 1997, and resided in Bridgeport for six years, before moving to New Haven in 2003. Lionel was a 2001 graduate of Warren Harding High School, Bridgeport. He was a chef, and had worked for Quinnipiac University Dining Services for the past two years. He had also worked for the Black Rock Yacht Club of Bridgeport for the past five years. In addition to his parents, Lionel is survived by five sisters, Nicole Vanterpool of Waterbury, Angelique Vanterpool of St. Thomas, formerly of Bridgeport, Kalimba Richards-Austin of Dacula, GA, Lebony Richards of Deerfield, FL and Makeda Nash Richards of St. Croix, U.S.V.I., two brothers, Lasim Richards of Encino, CA and Kareem Todman of Tallahassee, FL, his special nephew, Javier Stephens of New Haven, his godmother Elaine Isaacs of Brooklyn, NY, uncles Olman Connell, Layton Leonard, Lionel Richards, Jr., Lubin Richards and Lindell Richards of St. Thomas and Strickland Richards of the Bronx, NY, aunts Marcia Petros, Delight Fleming, Alica Richards, Lewada Richardsd and Edith "Lanee" Johnson of of St. Thomas, his best friends, LaDai McCoy, Sermarie Flores, Damion Sanders, Elvis Hazel, Jr., Charles Bellino and Brandon Braxton, and cousins, nephews and friends in New York and the Virgin Islands, too numerous to mention. Lionel was a great friend to some and a brother to many. Lionel's family wishes to invite relatives and friends to join them on Saturday, May 18th for a celebration of Lionel's life which will take place at 3:30 p.m. at the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. Burial will be private.
