Loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather

Obituary

Joseph J. Furtak, age 81, of Hamden, devoted husband of Anne Raphael Furtak, passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2017. The youngest son of Joseph and Antoinette Furtak, Joe was doted on by his five siblings, Leo, Teddy, Eddie, Sophie and Jane. He often ribbed his siblings about how they were sternly directed to eat what was offered before his mom turned to him and asked if Joey (the baby of the family) wanted something special. Joe loved reminiscing about growing up in the Goatville section of New Haven, and hanging out with friends in East Rock Park. He graduated from the former Boardman Trade School, where he played varsity baseball and basketball. Joe was a lifelong sports fan, who was lucky enough to pass much of his stint in the army in Europe refereeing baseball games for boys of Wire Co. 17th Sig. Batallion. Joe worked as an electrician before becoming a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in New Haven, where he worked contentedly for over thirty years. Though arthritis forced Joe to retire from the Post Office, he greatly enjoyed his subsequent job as a security guard for the Yale University Art Gallery. A man of simple pleasures, the things Joe prized most were his wife, his beloved children and grandchildren, pound cake, watching the Red Sox and the UConn Huskies, a day at the casino, and kicking back with his wife in their side by side recliners. His memory will be cherished by his three children, Joanne Perry and her husband Ken of Milford, Brian Furtak and his wife Lauren of Glastonbury, and Nancy Franco and her husband Doug of Hamden; as well as five treasured grandchildren, Bailey Furtak Valenzuela, Melissa Furtak, Ryan Evans, Mike Franco and Kate Perry.

Joe's family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. His funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 10:45 a.m in St. Stephen Church, 400 Ridge Road, Hamden. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum at All Saints Cemetery, North Haven. www.washingtonmemorialfh
