Obituary

José Antonio Rivera, 78 of New Haven died suddenly at Yale-New Haven Hospital on Monday, September 11, 2017, after being stricken at home. He was the beloved husband of forty two years to Flora Rivera. José was born in Comerio, Puerto Rico on January 30, 1939, a son of the late Antonio and Maria Rivera. He had resided in Brooklyn, NY for most of his life, and moved to New Haven after returning to Comerio in 1997. José was a self-employed independent truck driver for twenty five years, retiring in 1989 due to illness. He was an active member of Congregation Simchat Y'srael of West Haven. In addition to his wife, José is survived by four daughters, Nitza Rivera and Olga (Luís) Cosme of West Haven, Maria (Juan) Merced of Orange, and Lydia (William) Mora of Staten Island, NY, one son, José "Tony" (Maricely) Rivera, Jr. of Hamden, fourteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sons, José E. Rivera and Martin Rivera, two sisters, Ofelia Hernandez and Evangelia Rivera, and one brother, Gregorio Rivera.

José's family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 5:00~8:00 p.m. at the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home at 8:00 p.m. Burial will be private. www.washingtonmemorialfh.com
