Obituary

Eufemia "Effie" M. Smith, 82 of East Haven died peacefully on Monday, August 7, 2017 at Yale-New Haven Hospital, St. Raphael Campus with her loving family by her side. Effie was born in New Haven on March 7, 1935, a daughter of the late Augustine and Josephine Apicelli DeMatteo, and had resided in East Haven for most of her life. She was a department manager at the former Bradlee's Department Store in East Haven for thirty eight years, retiring in 1997, and was also a crossing guard for the East Haven Police Department for many years. Effie is survived by two daughters, Darlene Ferraro and her husband Michael of Ocala, FL and Adrene Marchitto of East Haven, three sisters, Angeline Lenzi of Spring Hill, FL, and Hope Rietz and Doreen Merola of East Haven, five grandchildren, Nicole Sciarra and Alfred Marchitto and his fiancé Christina Pepe of New Haven, and Augustine, Andrew and Darlene Marchitto, all of East Haven, and six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother in law Joseph Merola.

Effie's family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. Her funeral procession will leave from the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. in St. Vincent De Paul Church, 80 Taylor Ave., East Haven.
