Obituary

David Gerard Gagnon, 51 of Branford, CT passed away on Monday, December 25, 2017 at his home after a very long, valiant hard fight with esophageal and stomach cancer. David was born in New Haven on November 5, 1966, a son of Charmaine Marie Dostie Gagnon of North Haven and the late Dennis (Dennys) Gagnon. He grew up in North Haven and Hamden, CT as well as Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. He attended both Hamden and North Haven High Schools, as well as schools in Canada. David started working at a young age with his father building homes and roofing. After his father passed, David decided to start his own company. His concept started out as a garage and he became a self-professed engine builder, acquiring the name of "The House of Power". He gradually secured enough jobs so that in 1989 he could officially open "Dave Gagnon Racing Enterprises", better known as DGRE. David did everything required to build a complete race car, but his main love was engine building. He was diagnosed with cancer in April of 2014, and as he fought cancer and received chemo therapy, David tried to keep his love of building engines by doing builds at friends' garages or in their homes. David wanted to give special thanks to the Curtis Family in Monroe, CT, as Larry Curtis, Sr. took a chance on his first major build over thirty years ago. This continued through his family with Larry, Jr. and Don Curtis. The love David had for his family, is that it truly is his family, along with all of his racing family, including Jim Lafond of North Haven; Ed Riotte of Durham, CT, and countless others. His love for cars and the racing teams and racing families is never ending. David and Dawn would not have known what they would have done the past three years without all of them; too many to mention. Besides his mother, David is survived by his long time love/soulmate Dawn C. Siedlarz-Aponte and his daughter Cheyenne Aponte of Branford and his sister Lisa-Marie Gagnon of Gaspé, Quebec, many aunts and uncles in both Canada and the US, including Denise Schull and her husband Neal, and Mark Dostie of Hamden, Peter Dostie and his wife Sarah of Maine, Joseph Dostie and his wife Nancy of Guilford, CT, Brian Dostie and his wife Joanne of Branford, Suzzette Villafane and her husband Darrin of Deep River, CT, and Jacques and Georgiann (Poulin) Gagnon of North Haven. He is also survived by numerous cousins and relatives in Canada and the Unites States. David, his soulmate Dawn, and their daughter Cheyenne had been together for just over twenty years. David finally got engaged to Dawn in the summer of 2016 on top of Mt. Washington, NH where they professed their spiritual commitment of marriage to each other. Even though Cheyenne is not biologically his own, she is perfectly part of David's heart and soul and therefore is his daughter. In addition to his father, David is predeceased by his brother Daniel Gagnon, cousin Christian Gagnon, his maternal grandparents Laura M. Dostie and Joseph "Ray" Dostie, his paternal grandparents Lucien and Alice Gagnon, and his uncles Michael and Sean Dostie.

David's family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, December 29th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, December 30th from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Saturday at 10:00 a.m., the Rev. Francis Snell officiating. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to assist with funeral, burial plot and headstone costs be made to Dawn Siedlarz-Aponte, 7B Stonegate Circle, Branford, CT 06405. They can also be dropped off during visiting hours at the funeral home, or gifted through PayPal to dcsa67@comcast.net. Please note that there will be t-shirts and bracelets available on a first come, first serve basis in memory of Wings of Hope for David at the funeral home.
