Obituary

Colburn Emanuel Tompkins, 81 better known as "Tommy" of Hamden died peacefully at his home on Sunday, October 15, 2017. Colburn was born in Washington, DC on December 15, 1935, a son of the late Clarence D. and Louise Johnson Tompkins. He proudly served his country with the US Army from 1954-1957. He performed in boxing matches through the USO. He moved to New Haven after being discharged. On November 17, 1961 he married Madrue McClure. Tommy frequently enjoyed going to movies, playing cards, and traveling. He was employed by the New Haven Railroad, Sperry's Landscaping, CT Transit, and became a tractor trailer driver, and member of the Teamster's Local 443 of New Haven. He drove for various trucking companies, and continued driving until his retirement in 2012. He is survived by two children, Debra Tompkins of Hamden, and Timothy Tompkins and his wife Vivienne of East Haven, six grandchildren, Zipporah Thompkins of Hamden, Robert Levels, III of New York, Jasmine Tompkins of Stratford, Tiara McKnight and her husband Joshua and Lauren Tompkins of Hawaii, and Timothy Tompkins, II of Rochester, NY, two great grandchildren, Jordan and Noah McKnight, one sister, Loyce C. Smith and her husband, Gerald Smith, Jr. of Ft. Washington, MD, and a host of nieces nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by four brothers, Eugene, Marchant, Clarence, Jr. and Theodore Tompkins.

Tommy's family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven. www.waashingtonmemorialfh.com
