Mary Elizabeth Gillen Gatter, 99 of Wallingford, formerly of North Haven died peacefully on Monday, August 13, 2018 at the Masonicare Health Center, Wallingford with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late George Francis Gatter. Mary was born in New York City on February 25, 1919, a daughter of the late Walter and Frances Considine Gillen and had resided in North Haven for more than forty years before moving to Wallingford in 2009. She received her Bachelors in Sociology from New Rochelle College in 1940 and her Masters in Social Work from Fordham University in 1944. Mary went on to work as a social worker for the State of Connecticut for ten years, retiring in 1987. She is survived by two daughters, Virginia (Tom) Oleksyk of Foxboro, MA and Rosemary (Loren) Evarts of Meriden, four sons, Frank (Patricia) Gatter of North Haven, Paul E. (Maria Gallo) Gatter of West Hartford, Stephen Gatter of Natic, MA and Michael (Eileen) Gatter of Los Angeles, CA, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Catherine Culliney and a brother, George Gillen. Mary's family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, August 17th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. Her funeral procession will leave from the funeral home on Saturday, August 18th at 9:45 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. in St. Barnabas Church, 44 Washington Ave., North Haven. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven.
